Description
Commemorative set issued for the historic final journey of the Orient Express from Paris to Istanbul, 19–22 May 1977.
This complete set commemorates the last journey of the legendary Orient Express between Paris and Istanbul in May 1977.
The set includes:
* Commemorative medal in 925 sterling silver, approx. 32 mm diameter, weight approx. 13.46 g
* Original illustrated Orient Express envelope
* French postage stamp, postmarked Paris Gare P.L.M., 19 May 1977, at the point of departure
* Turkish postage stamp, postmarked Istanbul, 22 May 1977, at the final destination
* Original Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Jacques-Bernard Dupont, Managing Director of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits
* Original historical information sheet describing the final journey
* Original Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits presentation folder, decorated with its gold-coloured emblem
According to the accompanying certificate, the commemorative envelope and medal were specially created for this historic event, with the French stamp cancelled at the departure point in Paris and the Turkish stamp at the terminus in Istanbul.
An attractive and complete piece of Orient Express and European railway history, combining railway memorabilia, numismatics and philately.
Condition: Very good overall vintage condition. Some normal signs of age and storage are visible on the presentation folder. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
