Description from the seller
Beautiful and decorative antique allegorical statue with the title “Le Jour” (The Day), presumably produced in France or in French style in the first quarter of the 20th century, circa 1900–1920.
The statue depicts a classically formed youthful figure who, with one arm, holds a burning torch high above the head. The torch symbolizes daylight, awakening, and the advent of the new day.
The figure stands on an impressive winged bird with outstretched wings, giving the composition a great deal of movement and height. The whole rests on a turned, black-finished round plinth. At the front is the characteristic brass-colored title plate bearing the inscription:
LE JOUR
The statue has a fine dark bronze-colored alloy. Local traces of age, wear and some greenish oxidation are visible, appropriate to the age of the object and contributing to its authentic character.
Le Jour belongs to the well-known allegorical tradition in which Day and Night are depicted as opposites. For this model there are also pendants under the title “La Nuit.”
Condition
Good authentic state for the probable age. The statue shows normal signs of use and aging, including local patina wear, small scratches, surface soiling and oxidation. The black plinth and the metal title plate also show signs of aging.
The protruding parts, including the raised torch and wings, should be carefully protected during transport, as is to be expected.
View the photos carefully; they form an important part of the condition description.
