Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
A good, tested and working pair of Victorian opera glasses from the United Kingdom, dating to 1850–1900, with brass framing and mother‑of‑pearl shell panels and a central focusing wheel.
Description from the seller
An elegant pair of late 19th-century opera glasses, dating from circa 1880–1900.
The flared barrels are beautifully clad with individually fitted panels of natural mother-of-pearl, displaying subtle variations of white, silver, pale blue and iridescent tones. The mother-of-pearl is particularly attractive when viewed from different angles and contrasts beautifully with the warm, naturally patinated brass framework. The eyepieces are also finished with mother-of-pearl surrounds, while the central focusing wheel incorporates a matching mother-of-pearl band. Fine beaded detailing around the barrel mounts adds an additional decorative element typical of quality theatre glasses of the period. The central focusing mechanism operates and allows the barrels to extend and retract, as shown in the photographs.
A particularly decorative and elegant pair of antique theatre glasses, characteristic of fashionable opera accessories of the late 19th century.
Good antique condition with surface wear, patination, tarnishing, small marks and scratches consistent with age and use. The mother-of-pearl panels show natural variations in colour and surface. The focusing mechanism operates and the lenses are present. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the description.
