A late Victorian opera glasses pair, circa 1890, in a brass and silver-coloured metal frame with orange lacquered barrels, featuring beaded brass mounts and a central ribbed focusing wheel; in good condition, tested and working, from the United Kingdom.
Description from the seller
A pair of late Victorian opera glasses, circa 1890, the flared barrels finished in rich orange lacquer and mounted within a brass and silver-coloured metal frame.
The barrels are bordered by finely beaded brass mounts, the same decorative detail repeated around the central focusing mechanism. The silver-coloured eyepieces contrast with the warm brass extending tubes and fittings, while the central focusing wheel is fitted with a dark ribbed grip.
The focusing mechanism operates smoothly, extending and retracting the barrels, and the lenses are present.
The orange lacquer remains well preserved, with minor surface marks consistent with age. The metalwork displays patination, tarnishing and general age-related wear, with more noticeable wear to the dark finish surrounding the eyepieces, as visible in the photographs.
