Description from the seller
P. Ipsens Enke – Axel Sørensen – Art Nouveau / Skønvirke shallow dish with Pekingese – model 204 – 1927
Special Danish ceramic dish by P. Ipsens Enke Kgl. Hof Terracottafabrik, executed with a sculpturally modeled Pekingese as the central decoration.
The design is attributed to the Danish artist and sculptor Axel Sørensen (1879–1961) and dates from around 1927. Sørensen designed several distinctive animal dishes for P. Ipsens Enke during this period. The offered example is model 204, a model that in specialized Scandinavian ceramic documentation is specifically described as a dish with a Pekingese.
The shallow, organically shaped dish is executed in the colors so characteristic of P. Ipsens Enke: warm orange-, brown-, and black tones combined with green. In the center sits the fully three-dimensionally modeled little dog, making the piece both a dish and a small ceramic sculpture, particularly decorative.
On 1stdibs it is for sale for €281.
The underside bears the factory mark with crown, IPE 204 IV and DENMARK.
