Giovanni Varlese - Statue, Pescatorello - 41 cm - Bronze, Marble - 1910

Beautiful and guaranteed authentic early 20th-century Italian bronze sculpture, titled "Pescatorello" (The Little Fisherman), designed by the renowned Neapolitan artist Giovanni Varlese (1888–1922).

This atmospheric and vivid sculpture shows a young Neapolitan fisherman with a characteristic wide-brimmed hat and a loincloth, pressing his freshly caught fish to his chest with a proud smile.

Varlese, in the tradition of his teacher Vincenzo Gemito, was known for the masterful capturing of the raw and pure street- and fisher-life of Naples.

Signature: The sculpture is deeply and clearly signed with "VARLESE" in the bronze cameo.

Casting quality: This is an early, high-quality casting from the early 20th century (circa 1910). The figure of the fisherman is fully solid cast, which ensures exceptionally high quality and durability.
Base: The inside of the hollow rock pedestal shows the original, cast-in artisanal mounting strip and the classic traces of the traditional sand-cast or lost-wax process from that period see photos.

Patina: Featuring a beautiful, original dark patina with here and there light, natural aging wear on the raised edges (as at the toes), where the gold-yellow bronze colour photos through.

Pedestal: Mounted on the original, solid and precisely formed marble base.
