Waikiki by Henry Wessel, illustrated hardcover edition in English, 58 pages, 30 × 31 cm, with dust jacket, published in 2011, in as-new condition.
Description from the seller
New, sealed book.
Waikiki, one of Honolulu's most famous neighborhoods, was already a crowded tourist destination when Wessel (born 1942) took his photographs there, between the late 1970s and the early 1980s.
This volume gathers the selection of shots curated by the author and offers a testimony of American leisure at the time: among surfing, sand, and a tireless crowd in search of recreation. At the same time, Wessel explores Waikiki's contradictions: concrete hotels that invade pristine beaches and a culture that advances over nature. Despite the sun-soaked fun, the subjects photographed by Wessel often appear detached and dissatisfied, revealing an underlying sense of unease.
