Description from the seller
Napoleon I – Grand Sainte-Hélène Medal – 400 g – Ø 88.7 mm – 24-carat gold plated – Edition 1,769 copies – Case & certificate
Description
Impressive Sainte-Hélène Medal – Heritage of Napoleon Bonaparte, issued by La Maison de la Monnaie Belge in tribute to Napoleon I and his comrades-in-arms.
This commemorative issue reproduces, in a very large format of 88.7 mm, the iconography of the famous Sainte-Hélène Medal established under Napoleon III to honor former soldiers of the Napoleonic campaigns.
The presented specimen is particularly imposing with a weight of about 400 grams and features a Brilliant Universel finish with 24-carat gold coating.
Specifications indicated on the certificate of authenticity:
Designation: Sainte-Hélène Medal – Heritage of Napoleon Bonaparte
Publisher: La Maison de la Monnaie Belge
Quality: Brilliant Universel
Composition: CuZn15 coated with 24-carat gold
Diameter: 88.7 mm
Weight: approximately 400 g
Edge: knurled and unique serial number
Edition limited to only 1,769 copies
Obverse: portrait of Napoleon I looking to the right, surrounded by a laurel crown topped with the French Imperial Crown. Inscription: “NAPOLEON I EMPEROR”.
Reverse: large imperial composition with crown and laurel branches bearing the inscription:
« TO HIS GLORY-FILLED COMRADES
HIS LAST THOUGHT
STE HÉLÈNE
MAY 5, 1821 »
and the peripheral inscription “CAMPAIGNS OF 1792 TO 1815”.
The medal is presented in a transparent protective mount with screws, itself placed in its original presentation case with a black velvet interior.
The set is accompanied by its original certificate of authenticity as well as illustrated documentation from La Maison de la Monnaie Belge, tracing in particular the history of the Sainte-Hélène Medal and its attribution to the veterans of the Napoleonic campaigns.
The documentation recalls in particular that 14,162 Belgians who fought under the French flag between 1792 and 1815 were also eligible for the Sainte-Hélène Medal.
Medal in CuZn15 coated with 24-carat gold. The weight of about 400 g thus corresponds to the whole piece.
A very beautiful Napoleon-era collectible, particularly decorative due to its exceptional 9 cm size, its substantial weight, its gold finish, and its low announced edition of 1,769 copies.
Condition: very good overall, preserved in its transparent mount and its case. Certificate and documentation present. See the detailed photographs that form an integral part of the description.
