Beautifully executed, compact antique document box or value box of dark oak, probably Dutch work from the 17th or 18th century.
The front is richly decorated with two round medallions, surrounded by carved floral motifs, foliate work and scroll ornaments in a late Renaissance/baroque style. The chest features heavy wrought-iron hinge bands, iron ring handles on the sides and a keyhole on the front.
The lid opens to a sober, roomy interior with a separately raised side compartment, originally suitable for deeds, documents, writing implements or small valuables. Due to its compact, robust construction and heavy fittings, this box is plausibly used as a document box, archive chest or value box.
A characterful object with a nicely patinated patina, suitable as a special piece of furniture, storage chest or coffee table in a historic, country or eclectic interior.
Condition
In authentic, used condition with clear signs of age and use, including wear, scratches, discolorations, small damages and possible old restorations. Lock present; key missing.
