Original edition of this important monograph devoted to William Klein's work in the fashion world, published in 1994 on the occasion of an exhibition at the International Center of Photography in New York.

Photographer, filmmaker and graphic designer, William Klein profoundly renewed fashion photography by moving models out of studios and confronting them with the street, traffic, passersby and the chaos of the city. His bold framing, his use of movement, blur, grain and strong contrasts produced a vision of fashion radically different from the elegant conventions of his time.

The work gathers several decades of photographs, graphic creations and images related to William Klein's films. It blends work done for fashion magazines, portraits, urban scenes, documentary and compositions conceived by the artist himself.

Serge Gainsbourg also appears in the book. William Klein maintained with him a genuine artistic rapport: he photographed him notably for the visual universe of Love on the Beat, in a portrait that has become particularly emblematic. Gainsbourg also appears in several film works related to Klein's career.

The work also presents major figures in fashion and contemporary culture, among whom Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaïa, Grace Jones and other personalities who contributed to the artistic and cinematic history of William Klein.

An important book and still relatively undervalued in light of its graphical quality, of its place in William Klein's oeuvre and of its joint interest for collectors of photography, fashion, cinema and Serge Gainsbourg.

Condition: Good to very good overall. The illustrated hardcover is well preserved, with slight normal signs of handling. The interior is clean and fresh, with no annotations, no stains and no page detached.
The binding, however, shows noticeable looseness and remains fragile: the body of the book stays intact, but the structure lacks rigidity and must be handled with care. This peculiarity is clearly indicated and visible in the photographs.
