Description from the seller
One of the best Czech photobooks ever published, this outstanding publication combines stunning photography by Erich Einhorn with striking graphic design by Pravoslav Sovak to produce a celebration of the spa town of Marianske Lazne (formerly known as Marienbad) in Communist Czechoslovakia.
As Heiting notes, "in order to be successful, a photobook needs a story and a fitting design. Most often, these two important criteria are directly connected. With Erich Einhorn's photographs, Pravoslav Sovak thus created a lighthearted interpretation of 'Socialist Realism' in a book on the joys of a treatment in the spa town Marianske Lazne... No heavy handed advertising, no obvious propaganda, but a souvenir object that plays with exuberant design ideas, the book plays homage to the traditional spa town and it's buoyant atmosphere with colour fields, graphic elements and short text passages by Pavel Kohout." (Heiting, Czech and Slovak Photo Publications, p. 296)
This very impressive photobook is included in:
- Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook Vol. 3, p.28
- Manfred Heiting, Czech and Slovak Photo Publications 1918-1989, p.312-313
Condition:
Very good first edition copy of this masterpiece of photobook design. Small bump to lower corner but does not affect pages. Dust jacket worn and torn in places - old tape repairs on the inside. Please examine listing photos carefully for condition.
