Specimen: a 1950s taxidermied porcupinefish (Diodontidae) from France, in good condition, with dimensions 17 × 38 × 21 cm and weight 330 g.
Description from the seller
Vintage taxidermy of a diodon or hedgehog fish, France, 20th century
This intriguing specimen of a diodon, also known as hedgehog fish or porcupine fish, has a characteristic bulbous shape with protruding spines and a slightly open mouth. In the wild, the fish puffs up as a defense mechanism to deter predators with its impressive spiny skin.
On the underside the authentic opening is beautifully visible, bearing witness to the traditional artisanal dry- and prep-process (such specimens were formerly also used as a unique lamp or curiosity). The spiny skin and well-preserved fins give the piece a very striking and dynamic form.
The taxidermy is in generally good condition with a characteristic patina that suits its age. Light signs of aging are visible on the fins and skin, but overall it is a beautifully preserved item.
A touch of mystery and maritime history for the devoted collector of curiosities seeking a special "eyecatcher" for the cabinet of rarities!
Professionally packed and shipped with tracking
