A Javanese keris, the traditional dagger of Indonesia, also found across Malaysia and neighbouring Southeast Asia.
Forged with a visible pamor pattern – the pale contrasting lines produced by layered pattern-welding of differing iron and nickel-bearing alloys. The gonjo (base plate) is present and correctly fitted. The blade retains an old dark surface with the pamor clearly legible.
The dress comprises a carved wooden hilt (ukiran) of Javanese form, a metal mendak collar set with coloured stones, a wooden warangka crosspiece, and a gandar sheathed in a brass pendok decorated overall with stamped floral and foliate ornament.
MEASUREMENTS:
– Overall length in scabbard: 44 cm
– Blade length: 33 cm
CONDITION DETAIL:
Blade in good condition with clearly visible pamor, surface consistent with age, minor pitting and irregularities inherent to hand-forged work. As is normal for keris, the dress is not necessarily contemporary with the blade – Javanese keris are traditionally re-dressed during their working life.
