Auction piece: a magnificent and rare 19th-century wine carafe/decanter, a superb decorative art object that combines crystal artistry with bronze casting.
The upper part of the carafe features a high-quality gilded metal mounting, cast and chased with extraordinary details. The neck is decorated with geometric and stylized floral motifs, typical of the Neorenaissance taste.
The most impressive element is the spout, which takes the form of a realistic grotesque male bearded head with horns and long strands of hair fluttering backward. This “Mascherone” motif is a classic of Renaissance style. The handle is elegantly curved, with a geometric and grooved grip ending with foliate and pearl decorations where it joins the body of the carafe. The top of the lid features a small decorative knop. The gilding is still well preserved and gives the piece a luxurious glow.
The Carafe Body in Cut Crystal:
The body of the carafe is made of high-quality clear crystal. The surface is adorned with refined acid-engraved and cut motifs, depicting naturalistic patterns of ferns and leaves that rise gracefully along the carafe body.
The base is another highlight, with a large star-shaped motif cut and radiating from the center, visible even through the crystal.
