Celestial table globe - C.L. van Balen - Dutch astronomical globe - early 20th Century

Dutch tinplate classroom astronomical table globe, designed by geographer C.L. van Balen and published by J.B. Wolters in Groningen (circa 1905-1910).

The lithographed tin structure was manufactured by the famous tin box maker Wed. J. Bekkers & Zoon in Dordrecht, as clearly printed on the horizon ring.

This educational model features a flat horizon ring serving as a perpetual calendar and zodiac wheel with Dutch inscriptions (e.g., Weegschaal, Schorpioen, Schutter).

The vertical stand is decorated with stars and moon phases.

The globe cartography shows the geopolitics of the era (including Duitsch Oost-Afrika).

The cartography on the sphere and the text on the horizon ring are beautifully crisp and fully legible.
Signs of age, rust spots, and surface oxidation on the stand and legs, providing a wonderful authentic patina.

Mappamondo astronomico scolastico olandese da tavolo in latta cromolitografata, progettato dal geografo C.L. van Balen e pubblicato dall'editore scolastico J.B. Wolters a Groningen nei primi del Novecento (circa 1905-1910).

La struttura è stata interamente realizzata dal celebre produttore di scatole in latta Wed. J. Bekkers & Zoon a Dordrecht, come indicato chiaramente sul bordo dell'orizzonte.

Questo modello didattico è dotato di un anello piatto dell'orizzonte con calendario perpetuo e costellazioni dello zodiaco scritte in lingua olandese (e.g. Weegschaal, Schorpioen, Schutter).

La base verticale è decorata con motivi di stelle e fasi lunari.

La cartografia della sfera riflette la situazione geopolitica dell'epoca (è visibile ad esempio l'Africa Orientale Tedesca - Duitsch Oost-Afrika).
