Icon - Feast day icon - Wood - No Reserve

Great Russian icon depicting the Resurrection of Christ and the Descent into Hell, surrounded by the twelve principal feasts of the church. It dates to the mid-19th century. It is egg tempera on a gypsum ground on a wooden panel. The background is silver, covered with a gold lacquer. The inscriptions are in Old Church Slavonic. It measures 36.8 x 30.8 cm. It was purchased at Hargesheimer Kunstauktionen in Düsseldorf: the world's leading icon auction, held twice a year. The original purchase documentation is available on request.
