Icon - Nicholas the Wonderworker - Wood

This 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon presents Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker as its central figure in portrait form, surrounded by a Deesis composition and an array of border saints. Saint Nicholas, one of the most venerated figures in Orthodox Christianity, is depicted in a traditional, Byzantine-influenced style with a solemn yet compassionate expression. His deeply set eyes, furrowed brow, and finely rendered beard emphasise wisdom.

Above Saint Nicholas, the Deesis row features Christ Pantocrator in the center, flanked by the Mother of God on the left and John the Baptist on the right, both in supplication. This composition, one of the most significant in Orthodox iconography, symbolises the intercessory prayers of the saints on behalf of humanity.
