Icon - Feast day icon - Wood - No Reserve

Great Russian Icon of the Great Feasts, dating from the second half of the 19th century. Composed of two joined panels, with two reinforcing crosspieces at the ends. It is an egg tempera on a gesso ground; the background is silvered and covered with a gold lacquer. The edge is decorated with geometric motifs that imitate enamel. Measure 35.1 x 30.3 cm. Inscriptions in archaic Church Slavonic. Splendidly preserved. It was purchased at Hargesheimer Kunstauktionen in Düsseldorf: the world's leading icon auction held twice a year.
