1879 the Herzog Circus sought the strongest Bavarian and advertised this event nationwide. Hans Steyrer (1849-1906) won all competitions and topped it off: With the strength of his right middle finger he was able, as the only one, to lift a 508-pound stone for several seconds (to lift). Since then he was called "the Bavarian Hercules." A woodcut (19.5 x 19.5 cm) shows this unusual display of strength, here still with a 375-pound stone. - Besides this act, which laid the foundation for the fame of Hans Steyrer, still unforgettable in Bavaria today, there was also "The American Village Barber," a pantomime. - Left edge slightly trimmed.
