Stork Table Bell – Pompeian Model
Era: 1930-1940
Style: Pompeian-inspired, with Art Nouveau influences
Origin: probably Western Europe, precise attribution to be confirmed
Material: molded metal alloy, probably tin-based
Rare and elegant table service bell, known as the “Pompeian Stork Bell,” depicting a stylized stork.
The bird’s body forms the base of the bell, while its long neck creates an elegant vertical composition. The outer clapper is connected to the apex by a fine chain, allowing the bell to be operated by a simple motion.
The piece is distinguished by remarkable decorative richness: finely worked plumage, numerous relief motifs, scrolls and vegetal ornaments covering the bell and its pedestal. The base, in particular, is original, resting on four sculpted feet.
This type of bell is inspired by antique models associated with Pompeii and was reinterpreted by European founders from the late 19th century. Animal-decorated examples of this kind are now sought after for their decorative character and originality.
The piece is in excellent conserved condition, with a lovely overall patina. The bell has a particularly clear, frank, and resonant tone, indicating its functional character as well.
