AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

VeryRare hand-carved and hand-wrought wall mask designed by the well-known Art Deco artist Roland Paris (1894-1945). Multicolored polychrome: red, gold, gray and flesh tones.

Roland Paris was the second of five children in a family with a great passion for art and culture. Both parents were active writers, a brother was a singer and actor, and a sister dealt with batik. It is therefore not surprising that Roland discovered his love for the visual arts at a young age. From 1909 he studied applied art and sculpture in Weimar and Munich, until he was drafted for military service. After returning from World War I, he moved to Berlin in 1919. In 1924 he married Elisabeth Lisl Austen (born 1897), who performed as a dancer at the Theater des Westens. He then found his inspiration in the theatre and dance world. However, his caricatured, exaggerated figures carry his own facial features or those of his wife. Most of his designs were cast in bronze or chrys-elephantine by the Berlin foundry Ernst Kraas, though porcelain versions and rare wood carvings are also known from this period. In addition, Paris was a prolific graphic artist and caricaturist, and he left behind a poetry collection illustrated by himself. Shortly before the end of World War II, he died in an air raid near Swinemünde.

His entire life he was fascinated by fools in all their forms.

Literature: Albert Shayo, Roland Paris: The Art Deco Jester, p. 128.

Condition: good. Wood with a shrinkage crack at the top behind the crown. Not visible from the front due to age. 1 shrinkage crack on the side of the crown and 1 flake at the central tip of the crown. See close-up photos.
