Among the Dogon, the horse is very present in mythology and cosmology.

The creator god Amma, from the four elements, creates « a living germ », the basis of the world. Four twin pairs, ancestors of humans, namely the eight Nommo, are then formed.

After a period of great disorder caused by Ogo, one of the twins, Amma sacrifices the second twin, then resurrects him by giving him a human form.

The resurrected Nommo descends to Earth using an ark that metamorphoses into a horse.

The horse is associated with the Hogon, the religious leader. The Hogon is depicted astride a horse on rings, or in wooden rider sculptures, or again in bronze lost-wax casting.

Chez les Dogons, le cheval est très présent dans la mythologie et la cosmologie. 

Le dieu créateur Amma, à partir des quatre éléments, crée « un germe vivant », base du monde. Quatre couples de jumeaux, ancêtres des hommes, soit les huit Nommo, sont alors formés. 

Après une période de grand désordre suscité par Ogo, l’un des jumeaux, Amma sacrifie le deuxième jumeau, puis le ressuscite en lui donnant une forme humaine. 

Le Nommo ressuscité descend sur la Terre en utilisant une arche qui se métamorphose en cheval.

Le cheval est associé au Hogon, chef religieux. Le Hogon est représenté à cheval sur des bagues, ou bien dans des sculptures de cavaliers en bois, ou encore dans des bronzes à la cire perdue.
