Commemorative 5 Mark coin minted by the German Democratic Republic at the Berlin Mint (mint mark A), dedicated to the church of St. Thomas (Thomaskirche) in Leipzig, famed for its close ties with Johann Sebastian Bach, who served there as cantor from 1723 to 1750. The obverse depicts the church façade with detailed architectural treatment, accompanied by the inscription THOMAS KIRCHE and LEIPZIG. The reverse shows the national coat of arms of the German Democratic Republic, surrounded by the official state denomination, the face value and the year of issue. Struck in Proof quality, the specimen presents intense mirrored fields and frosted reliefs that produce a marked Deep Cameo contrast, with surfaces virtually blemish-free and extraordinary visual appeal, characteristics fully in line with the PR68 DCAM rating given by PCGS. This issue is part of the commemorative series devoted to the historical and cultural heritage of the German Democratic Republic, highlighting one of the most emblematic temples of German musical and religious tradition.
