Item Description
This lot comprises 98 Japanese banknotes spanning the Taisho and Showa periods, offering a broad cross-section of early to mid twentieth-century Japanese paper currency. The group includes Bank of Japan (Nippon Ginko) notes ranging from small fractional denominations such as 5 sen and 10 sen up to 5 yen, 10 yen, 50 yen and 100 yen, alongside Greater Japan Imperial Government (Dai Nippon Teikoku Seifu) issues in 10 sen, 20 sen and 50 sen values.

Notable pieces visible among the lot include 100 yen notes bearing the portrait of Prince Shotoku (Shotoku Taishi) with the Yumedono Hall of Horyuji Temple depicted on the reverse; 10 yen notes portraying the Nara-period courtier Wake no Kiyomaro; 5 yen notes portraying the scholar-statesman Sugawara no Michizane; a 50 yen Bank of Japan note featuring statesman and finance minister Takahashi Korekiyo; and an earlier 1 yen note depicting the legendary courtier Takenouchi no Sukune. A scarce 50 sen military scrip (gunyo tegata) dated Showa 12 (1937) and issued by the Greater Japan Imperial Government for use by Japanese forces is also included, recognisable by its facing phoenix and dragon design and the counterfeit-warning text on the reverse.

Serial numbers, block numbers and print dates vary across the notes, reflecting multiple issue periods within the Taisho and Showa eras. As is typical for circulated paper currency of this age, general handling wear such as folds, creases, softened corners, toning and light soiling can be found throughout the lot.

Condition
Condition varies considerably across the 98 notes, ranging from relatively well-preserved examples to pieces showing heavier staining, tears, edge loss or fragility consistent with genuine circulation and age. Please review the accompanying photographs closely, as they form part of the condition assessment; buyers should expect wear consistent with paper currency of this period.
