A monographic volume which, through the analysis of the incredible structures—architectures but also objects of design—reconstructs the complex design research of the Spanish architect-engineer.

Santiago Calatrava Valls (Benimanet, Valencia 1951) is an architect and engineer. From the early eighties he has been involved in competitions and projects, and in over thirty major realizations, including bridges, stations, airports, exhibition complexes, and urban developments.

The aim of the volume—accompanied by color photographs, layouts, and ingenious autograph sketches—is to trace the contours of the heterodox career of the “builder,” which has made Calatrava one of the most original figures in contemporary architecture.

His work as designer and “structuralist” has unfolded alongside a constant theoretical research—supported by a virtuoso hand in drawing—that has found expression both in refined and disconcerting design objects and in rigorous sculptural works. Even in this less well-known aspect of his activity the volume provides ample documentation, as it is impossible to separate what is incessantly interwoven in the same fruitful research.
