Cartier – Two lapel buttons with a Scallop Shell motif in vermeil and ruby – circa 1950
Rare pair of Cartier Paris lapel buttons made for the Shell company, featuring a scallop shell, the traditional symbol of the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
Made in vermeil (gold-plated silver), they were given by Shell to its employees to reward their seniority: the first bears the inscription “10 ANS,” while the second, “15 ANS,” is set with a ruby.
This system of distinctions is documented: 10 years without a ruby, 15 years with ruby,
Both pieces are signed Cartier Paris on the reverse and bear silver control marks.
One of the buttons is kept in its Cartier Paris – London – New York case.
