Spinel (Magnesiospinel) is a mineral in the oxide and hydroxide class with the end-member composition MgAl2O4, and is chemically a magnesium-aluminate.
Spinel crystallizes in the cubic crystal system. The spinel structure is one of the most important and common structure types, in which, besides spinel, 30 other known minerals crystallize. Spinel is also the eponym for the Spinel supergroup newly defined by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA).
Spinel predominantly forms octahedral crystals, rarely dodecahedral and cubic crystals and twins, growing up to 30 centimeters. It is also found as granular to massive mineral aggregates. Due to solid-solution and frequent impurities of various metal ions such as iron, chromium, zinc, cobalt or manganese, natural spinels exhibit a wide range of colors. Since clear, transparent spinels show a strong, glassy luster on polished surfaces and, due to their high Mohs hardness of 8, are relatively resistant to damage, these so-called “precious spinels” are valuable gemstones.
