Description from the seller
Lot of 6 Indian Erotic Miniatures (Kama Sutra), hand-painted on paper, 19th/20th century (including work attributed/signed by J.S. Chandel). The lot stands out as a visually striking and collectible miscellany composed of three different “hands” and execution periods. In the lot, the period sheet (19th century) depicts an interior scene with a nobleman wearing a turban and bears on the back a rare and important descriptive inscription in traditional Devanagari script, structured like a catalog card (the translation highlights key terms from classical love treatises, including “Maithunam” (identifies sexual union) and “Domani” (relating to the social classification of the characters)). The other five sheets belong to exquisite 20th-century artisanal productions. The sheet sizes range from 21.5 x 14.5 cm (the smaller) to 23.5 x 17.5 cm. Sheets in generally good condition considering their age and the fragility of the paper support, with a patina of time and small age-related halos. For all details, please refer to the photos. The paintings will be shipped with trackable professional packaging.
