Description from the seller
An amazing and large fossil skull of Bison priscus. This steppe wisent was the ancestor of the forest and prairie bison (Bison antiquus) as we know them today. Indeed, they were as much as 50% larger.
Bison priscus could reach shoulder heights of up to 2 m and weighed almost 1000 kg. As grazers, they lived in large, impressive herds, bulls and cows with calves mixed together. They lived in the Pleistocene until about 5,000 years ago.
This large and very complete skull was found in Poland and is about 75,000 years old. The sutures are very clearly visible.
Around 130,000 years ago it was possible to reach America via Alaska, and large numbers departed from Eurasia.
Neanderthals hunted these bison and they were their main food source.
This skull was in the possession of a prominent French family for a long time, having owned it for over 100 years.
The skull remains completely stable to this day and has not been treated.
Approximately 108 cm wide, which would have come from a very large male individual.
The quality is very high and there are hardly any damages, which is quite unusual since these skulls were used by our ancestors and/or Neanderthals for many rituals.
