Moreau - Desk set - metal casting

Original Art Deco animal sculpture (Bulldog) on a pen rest, signed H. Moreau, a striking focal point for any desk.

France, ca. 1920. The animal sculpture mounted on the wooden stepped pen rest is made of green patinated cast metal and depicts a stylized French Bulldog. It bears the signature H. Moreau at the lower edge. Typical of Moreau are angular, Cubism-inspired forms, sharp geometric modeling, distinctive snouts and eye areas (especially the characteristic glass eyes). The pen rest is predominantly black patinated with wood-colored accents on the edges.

The front portion of the pen rest measures 30 cm in length, the back portion 26.5 cm; it is 3 cm high and 12 cm deep. The Bulldog is 9 cm tall.
