Originating from Obock in the Côte des Somalis, this exceptional registered letter Type Sage Paquebot Ligne N (1900) is catalogued by Yvert et Tellier and is in obliterated condition.
Description from the seller
Beautiful and spectacular registered letter traveled in January 1900 to Saint-Étienne (Loire), sent by sea.
Routing & Marcophily:
Octagonal maritime postmark on the front: “LIGNE N / 8 JANV 00 / PAQ. FR.” (Messageries Maritimes, Indian Ocean / Far East line, stop in the Red Sea).
Handwritten “Recommandé” with registration number 364.
On the back: arrival stamp dated Saint-Étienne and the original wax seals.
Composition of the franking (era philatelic cover):
Front:
Sage Type / General Colonies: 15 c blue and 25 c black.
Obock: 25 c black overprinted red.
Protectorate of the Somali Coast / Djibouti: large format 10 c brown and green (view of the port).
Back:
Protectorate of the Somali Coast / Djibouti: 5 c green and carmine, sealed under the red wax seal of the period.
Condition & Note for the collector:
An authentically traveled, period-appropriate philatelic cover. In keeping with the practices of on-board offices on these composite covers, the maritime cancellation mainly hits the center of the envelope; the higher-value stamps of Djibouti and Obock did not receive an individual direct cancellation (stamps escaped the cancel).
Spectacular, intact, and highly representative of late 19th-century colonial maritime correspondence.
