The publication appeared on the occasion of the Rigaud exhibition at the Maeght Gallery and, together with number 3, is among the earliest issues of the Derrière le Miroir series founded in 1946. Maeght himself lists eight pages and eight original lithographs for this number.

Of particular note is the extraordinarily extensive graphic accompaniment with 8 original color lithographs by Gilbert Rigaud.

Already the cover bears explicitly the printed designation:

“Lithographies originales de Rigaud”

The lithographs are executed in a characteristic combination of black and ocher/yellow tones and extend across the cover and inner pages.

The copy is in an age-appropriate, generally appealing condition.

The original color lithographs still show a strong black-ochre color impression.

However, the paper shows clearly visible aging coloration, especially at the outer edges and partly along the folds, as well as minor storage and handling signs. There are also age-related marks on the cover.

These changes are not unusual for a nearly 80-year-old artist’s booklet, but are expressly mentioned here.

Collecting significance

DLM No. 3 is a very early issue of Derrière le Miroir. Of particular interest is the unusually extensive provision with eight original color lithographs, which runs throughout the entire issue.

The combination of original graphics, texts by Jean Leymarie, Édouard Jaguer, and Jacques Kober, and the historical context of Galerie Maeght makes the issue interesting both as an artist’s publication and as a document of postwar French art.
