Royal Copenhagen porcelain bonbonnière in egg shape from Denmark, 8 cm high, 13 cm wide, 9.5 cm deep, dating to 1889–1891 (model 1934/658), in excellent condition with a lid painted of two newly hatched chicks.
Description from the seller
An unusual early Royal Copenhagen bonbonnière shaped like an egg—an especially charming little piece of Easter porcelain. The lid is painted with two newly hatched chicks, one white and the other warm brown, standing against a softly shaded grey background. Delicate moulded lines around the sides suggest the texture of feathers while quietly following the curve of the egg.
The decoration has the gentle, almost storybook quality found in Royal Copenhagen’s early animal subjects. The two-piece form would originally have held sweets or another small Easter gift, although it is now just as appealing displayed closed.
Royal Copenhagen was founded in 1775 and became particularly celebrated during the late 19th century for its softly coloured underglaze porcelain. Natural subjects—birds, animals, flowers and insects—were treated with remarkable delicacy, and less familiar forms such as this bonbonnière are much harder to encounter than the factory’s vases and figurines.
