Rare Javanese Keris Solo - 5 Luk with Figural Buffalo Horn Grip and Brass Pendok - Java, Indonesia

Description:

Beautiful, authentic Javanese Keris from Solo (Surakarta), Central Java. A characterful collectors-keris with a lot of presence and considerable age.

This keris consists of a complete mount and has an old, authentic Wilah / Wilah with 5 luks (waving bends). The blade clearly shows age and patina, with visible traces of pamor in the forging. The dapur is typical for Solo.

The mounting in detail:

• Hulu / Handle: Very beautiful and expressive carved figure-hilt from solid buffalo horn. The grip depicts a seated figure, possibly a Togog or ancestor figure, with a lot of detail in the sarong and facial expression. Beautiful deep, dark patina. Mounted with an old selut / mendak of metal with a beaded edge.
• Warangka / Sheath: Classic Solo Ladrang Perahu form, executed in beautiful warm hardwood with gorgeous grain. The warangka has the characteristic boat form with the curled tip.
• Pendok: The lower part of the sheath is clad with a brass pendok, richly chased and inscribed with deeply worked floral motifs and tendril work. Very decorative and in excellent condition.

It is a keris with character, unrestored, in entirely original and honest condition as found. A beautiful piece for the keris collector of Indonesian weapons and tribal art.

Condition: Good and original for its age. The wooden warangka shows signs of use. The brass pendok is intact with light patina. The buffalo horn handle shows signs of age and a lovely patina from use. The old iron Wilah has rust and patina appropriate to its age, see photos for an accurate impression. This is not a newly made tourist-keris.

• Warangka / Sheath: Classic Solo Ladrang Perahu (boat-shaped) form, made of beautiful warm hardwood with a nice grain. Features the characteristic curled tip.
• Pendok: The lower part of the sheath is covered with a brass pendok, richly chased and embossed with deeply worked floral and vine motifs. Very decorative and in excellent condition.
