August Walther & Söhne – Art Deco candy box with lid – Amethyst glass with gilded relief decoration – ca. 1930

Magnificent Art Deco candy box/variant with lid, attributed to August Walther & Söhne from Ottendorf-Okrilla near Dresden, Germany, circa 1930.

Executed in deep amethyst-colored pressed glass and around it a wide, richly decorated gilded relief frieze. The continuous frieze depicts classical and mythological scenes with human figures, animals, trees, musicians, and chariots.

The bottom is strongly faceted, so the glass shows, depending on the light, beautiful shades from dark purple to ruby red/amethyst.

What makes this example special is that it is complete and preserved with the matching glass lid. The domed lid is in the same amethyst color and features a distinctive decorative glass knob.

This type of decorative glass belongs to the so-called “Kunst-Dekor-Gläser” that August Walther & Söhne produced around the early 1930s. Comparable amethyst-colored objects with gilded friezes can be found in historical Walther catalogs from this period.

Condition:
Very good vintage/antique condition. The glass presents beautifully and the lid closes snugly. The gilded relief decoration is still clearly visible. Light signs of use and age appropriate to the period. Please examine the photos carefully; they form part of the description.

A special and collectible example of German Art Deco decorative glass from the interwar period, attractive due to the combination of deep amethyst glass, richly executed gilded decoration, and the preserved matching lid.
