This characterful Indian altar piece is a splendid example of late 19th-century Hinduist brass casting from the Shaivism tradition. The object depicts the sacred bull Nandi, the faithful mount of the god Shiva, calmly resting beneath the monumental protective canopy of the holy cobra Naga. This type of statue was traditionally used on a home altar for performing daily rituals. A notable detail is the original metal eye at the top of the cobra canopy. From here hung originally a small copper dropper with which water or milk was continuously poured over a prominent Shiva Lingam during the Abhisheka ceremony.
