Portuguese wooden and silver cane 833/1000 - Javali II contrast, c. 1887–1937.

Old Portuguese cane, made in wood with a reddish-brown tone, featuring a long slender shaft ending in a curved grip, of simple and elegant design. The end of the grip is enriched by a molded application in Portuguese silver 833/1000, asymmetrical and enveloping, following the curve of the wood.

The silver piece bears Portuguese control marks, including the Javali II, corresponding to the 833 fine silver title used in the period between 1887 and 1937, with the marks also showing the silversmith’s mark. The combination of dark wood, smoothly polished surface with a patina acquired from use, and the silver gives the cane a sober and distinctive appearance.

The wood preserves small marks, scratches, darkening, and irregularities typical of age and use. The silver likewise shows superficial scratches, small marks, and oxidation consistent with antiquity. The silver cap/application is loose, showing some play relative to the wood. No attempt was made to hide or restore these signs of use.

Because of the presence of the Javali II contrast, this is an exemplar produced in Portugal from the late 19th century to the first third of the 20th century, representative of the personal masculine accessories used in that period.
