Folding chair - Walnut - Shield, Crown, Dolphins

Spanish X-frame chair. A 19th‑century Spanish piece, Renaissance-inspired, in carved walnut wood. A chair with an articulated X‑frame (scissor type), designed to fold for closing and transport. Backrest of architectural composition, with turned and torsion-spun side uprights, topped by an elaborately cut cresting rail and sculptural decoration. At the center of the crest stands a heraldic‑type composition, consisting of a shield surmounted by a crown and flanked by two dolphins afronted, elements with a marked historicist influence. The composition, of pronounced symbolic and ornamental character, evokes heraldic tradition and the 19th‑century taste for reviving motifs from Renaissance and Iberian aristocratic furniture. Not being possible to unequivocally identify the arms depicted inside the shield, the piece is not attributed to a particular family or lineage. The uprights of the backrest feature twisted-column decoration, a motif characteristic of Renaissance revival, reinforcing the architectural character of the piece. The structure extends to the legs, sabre‑shaped and curved, articulated to allow the chair to be opened and closed. The walnut wood, with its warm tone and enhanced by the carving, is worked with abundant sculptural decoration, combining architectural, heraldic and zoomorphic motifs. The carving work gives the piece a markedly scenographic and ornamental character. The X‑frame articulated chair type, traditionally known as a scissor chair, has Iberian Peninsula antecedents, later recovered and reinterpreted by the historicist movements of the 19th century. In this exemplar, the functional structure is paired with Renaissance Spanish‑inspired decoration, revealing 19th‑century taste for recreating historical models. The presence of the coronated shield and the afronted dolphins is particularly relevant, giving the chair an appearance of apparatus and a possible noble character, although, in the absence of clearly identifiable arms, it is more accurate to understand them as heraldic and revivalist inspirations. A piece of significant decorative interest, representative of 19th‑century Spanish historicism, standing out for the quality of the carving, the articulated structure, and the heraldic composition of the crest.
