Nsapo ceremonial axe – Songye, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Ceremonial axe attributed to the Songye tradition, from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, of the type usually called Nsapo.

The piece stands out for its elaborate construction and for the strong sculptural character of its blade. It features a wide metallic blade with a curved profile, joined by several metallic elements decorated with incised geometric motifs. The ensemble retains a pronounced patina, oxidations, and signs of use and age visible in the photographs.

The handle is dark wood, slightly widening at its upper end, and presents a section decorated by a fine wrapping of copper metal. The combination of wood, iron, and metal creates an object of great visual presence.

This type of axe should not be understood solely as a functional weapon. Among the Songye and other peoples of the Congolese region, there are examples of specially crafted pieces linked to prestige, rank, and social representation, where the richness of the ornamentation became as important as the form of the object itself.
