2011 Tristan da Cunha 5 Crowns commemorative proof celebrating the Royal Wedding of HRH Prince William and Catherine “Kate” Middleton.
A large and striking commemorative issue from Tristan da Cunha, produced for the Royal Wedding on 29 April 2011.
The coin measures approximately 65 mm in diameter and is specified as 5 oz. It is struck in cupro-nickel and layered in pure 24-carat gold, giving it its gold appearance. The coin is proof quality with a milled edge.
One side depicts Prince William and Catherine Middleton together with the wedding date, the denomination FIVE CROWNS, the Tristan da Cunha emblem and the individual number 371/999. The other side features Queen Elizabeth II.
The accompanying London Mint Office documentation states that the issue was limited to only 999 coins and records Buckingham Palace as the approval authority.
The coin is supplied in its original presentation format as shown in the photographs.
Important: this is a 24-carat gold-layered/gold-plated cupro-nickel coin, not a solid-gold coin. The gold layer should therefore not be valued according to its bullion weight.
Condition
Proof / FDC appearance, housed in its presentation capsule. The photographs should be considered part of the description. There are some visible hairlines/surface marks on the reflective proof surfaces, particularly under strong lighting, so I would describe it as Proof with minor handling/storage marks, rather than claiming perfect flawless proof condition.
