Description from the seller
A Significant and Decorative Sphere of Natural Jasper — This magnificent Red Jasper sphere, carved from a solid block from Madagascar, is brought to the attention of collectors and lovers of natural objects. With a substantial diameter of 126 mm and a weight of almost three kilograms, this specimen stands out not only for its size but also for its rich color and the complex texture of its surface. The perfectly polished finish transforms a rough stone into an object of contemplation, a geological microcosm that encases the primordial history of the Earth. Visual examination reveals a world of fascinating details. The dominant color is a warm vermilion red, shading into more orange and terracotta tones, creating a vibrant and deep chromatic effect. The surface is not uniform but traversed by a dense network of natural lines and fractures, testimony to the stresses the mother rock endured through geological eras. These veins are enriched by darker inclusions, likely accumulations of hematite, and by lighter, almost “sprayed” areas that create a dynamic visual contrast and a suggestive brecciated effect. The mirror polish accentuates every detail, reflecting light and giving the object an almost liquid presence. From a mineralogical standpoint, Red Jasper is an opaque variety of Chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. Its famous red coloration is due to the widespread presence of iron oxides and hydroxides, in particular hematite. The complex pattern visible in this sphere tells a geological story of fracture and reconsolidation. The original rock, formed in a silica-rich environment, underwent tectonic events that fragmented it; subsequently, hydrothermal fluids rich in minerals percolated through the cracks, cementing the fragments and creating the veins and inclusions we admire today. This sphere is therefore not just an object, but a three-dimensional geological document. Beyond its undeniable scientific and collecting interest, this specimen represents a striking decorative element. The spherical shape, an archetype of perfection and totality, pairs magnificently with the mineral’s inherently imperfect and organic nature. Its substantial size and warm colors make it capable of becoming the focal point of a room, whether a professional study, a library, a contemporary living room, or a modern Wunderkammer. It is an object that invites touch and contemplation, a piece of natural history that carries timeless elegance. The small stand visible in the photos is for display purposes and is not included in the lot. Technical details Name: Red Jasper Classification: Mineral, variety of Chalcedony Quartz Provenance: Madagascar Dimensions: 126 x 126 x 126 mm Weight: 2934 g Conditions: Natural, excellent polish. The surface features consolidated natural veining and fractures and a small area intentionally left rougher to show the matrix. Treatments: None, only cutting and polishing.
