Description from the seller
Characterful rural carved figure from the Black Forest, likely from the first half of the 20th century.
Depicted is a cozily reclined wanderer or farmer with a long pipe. He wears a pointed cap, a laced waistcoat, a loosely cut shirt, and long trousers. A slender staff runs along behind the figure. The unusual posture and the contented, upward-looking expression give the depiction a humorous and lively character.
The figure was carved by hand from wood, partly painted in color, and mounted on a tall, dark-stained wooden pedestal. Particularly appealing are the clearly visible carving traces, the worked folds of the clothing, and the details on the pipe, hands, and face.
Age-appropriate condition with visible signs of use and wear. The paint finish shows areas of abrasion, fading, and minor flaws. The pedestal also shows light scratches and age-related traces. Please note the numerous close-up shots that are part of the condition description.
Origin: Black Forest, Germany
Dating: probably the first half of the 20th century
Material: carved wood
Finish: partly color-painted
A striking historical character figure and a decorative collectible for fans of traditional folk art, rural depictions, and old wood carvings.
