The history of Optik Stein Erfurt:

Mechanic Richard Hegelmann (a street in Erfurt was recently named after him) founded the company on October 1, 1878 at Bahnhofstraße 40 and moved it two years later to the current building Anger 16.

From 1905 Hegelmanns son-in-law Martin Stein shaped the profile and the name of the company: Optiker Stein. In 1922 Martin Stein died and his widow married optician Carl Hilbich. After his death she ran the company alone from 1948 to 1951.

On January 1, 1952, optician master Fritz Vothknecht became the new owner. After 25 years of successful work he passed the company on to his son, the state-certified optician master Ewald Vothknecht. In the context of the then renovation of Anger into a pedestrian zone in 1978, the company was also thoroughly modernized. Just in time for the 100-year anniversary Optiker Stein shone in full glory.
