Man en vrouw buste - Statue - Makondé - Tanzania

An exceptionally heavy and monumental pair of two hand-carved African busts, depicting a man and a woman. This pair is crafted from the very top quality dark heartwood of the African ebony tree (Mpingo/Diospyros).

Unique features and quality:
What makes this set absolutely unique is the impressive size of 38 centimeters tall, combined with the extreme total weight of no less than 15 kilograms (about 7.5 kg per bust). This proves that the busts are solid throughout and carved from very dense, precious hardwood that sinks directly in water. This caliber was not made as a simple tourist souvenir at the time, but served as a high-quality export or status artwork.

Style and origin:
The sculptures display beautifully detailed carving, with the smooth, polished facial features superbly contrasting with the deep, hand-carved textures of the traditional headscarf and hairstyle. The style is a classic example of East African (Makonde/Kenya) wood carving from the mid-century period (circa 1950–1960). This kind of piece was at the time a sought-after status symbol in modern Western interiors and aligns perfectly with current Mid-Century and Art Deco trends.

On the bottom of the wooden base a faded old stamp/mark is visible (see photos), which adds to the authentic vintage character and the documented history of these pieces.

Condition:
In very good and solid vintage condition. The wood shows light, natural drying cracks and minor surface scratches that are entirely inherent to age and the natural product. No major damages or missing parts.
