Ancient polychrome wooden Cherub – 18th century, polychrome wood, gold.

An important devotional sculpture depicting a Cherub, executed in carved wood and presumably polychrome, attributable to the sculptural production of the mid-18th century.

The work presents a setting of notable quality, characterized by the refined modeling of the infant face, the softness of the features, and the distinctive expressiveness of the gaze. The hairstyle, richly animated and carved with a sinuous movement, frames the face, giving the composition a strong three-dimensional effect.

Particularly interesting is the treatment of the polychromy, today preserved with a significant patina of age and traces of the original finish, which give the sculpture an authentic and highly evocative appearance.

The Cherub is depicted with a neck and bust accompanied by a characteristic ruff/pleated ornament, an element that contributes to the refinement of the overall ensemble and to its possible use as a decorative and devotional element of an important ecclesiastical complex or of a historic residence.
