A striking decorative pair of patinated bronze candelabra, each 61 × 27 × 19 cm, attributed to Louis-Valentin Elias Robert, in the Art Nouveau style from the late 19th century and made in France, featuring classical draped female figures on stepped pedestals holding the candle holders.
Description from the seller
An impressive and exceptionally decorative pair of large brass patinated candelabras, each shaped as an elegant classical female figure or caryatid, dressed in finely executed draperies in antique style.
The figures stand in a graceful pose on architecturally stepped pedestals and raise their arms above their heads to bear the candle holders. The refined modeling, expressive faces, and especially the meticulously worked folds of the garments testify to a high-quality execution of the bronze work.
The candelabras are executed in the French Neo-Empire tradition and reflect the enduring fascination with classical antiquity, which exerted a significant influence on French decorative arts during the 19th century.
The sculptural treatment and the classical idiom show clear stylistic kinship with the oeuvre of Louis-Valentin Elias Robert (1821–1874), known for his finely modeled classical and allegorical figures.
An imposing and harmonious pair with a strong architectural and sculptural presence.
