Description from the seller

Russian-Orthodox Icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker – Tempera and Gilding on Panel. Ancient Russian-Orthodox icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (Saint Nicholas of Myra / Nicholas the Wonderworker), one of the most venerated saints in Eastern Christian tradition.
Saint Nicholas is depicted frontally in episcopal vestments, with the right hand raised in the traditional blessing gesture and the Gospel opened in the left hand. The text of the book is rendered in Slav-ecclesiastical characters.
To the sides of the central figure are depicted Jesus Christ and the Mother of God, in the traditional Russian iconography associated with Saint Nicholas.
The work is executed on a sturdy wooden panel with painting ground, gilded decorations and rich ornamental motifs. Particularly interesting is the finely worked and punched gilded background, enriched by multicolored floral elements in tones of blue, green, white and red.
The back preserves two wooden crossbars inset into the panel, an element traditionally used in the construction of ancient icons to limit deformation.
In terms of stylistic, decorative and constructive features, the work appears compatible with late 19th-century / early 20th-century Russian production.
Dimensions: about 31 × 26 cm
Thickness: about 2 cm
Material: wooden panel, painting ground, paint and gilding
Subject: Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker
The icon shows evident and fascinating traces of time: surface wear, small losses of color and gilding, abrasions and marks along the edges, as clearly documented in the photographs. Such imperfections are consistent with the age and history of the object.
No known recent restoration interventions have been carried out.
The photographs are an integral part of the description and show in detail the condition of the work.
Any duties, customs taxes or other import charges are, of course, the recipient's responsibility.
