Louis Isadore Kahn (1901–1974) was one of the most influential masters of twentieth-century architecture, renowned for uniting the functionality of the Modern Movement with the monumentalism and spirituality of ancient classical ruins. Born in present-day Estonia to a Jewish family, he moved to the United States as a child and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, but his true artistic breakthrough came after his fifties, following a journey in the Mediterranean that dazzled him with the solemnity of stone and brick structures. His design philosophy was based on the strength of pure geometric forms, the sincere use of visibly exposed materials such as concrete and travertine, and above all the mystical role of natural light in giving life to interior spaces. Among his absolute masterpieces stand out the Salk Institute in California, masterfully facing the ocean, the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas, renowned for its zenithal lighting, and the imposing Parliament Building of Dhaka in Bangladesh. In addition to his work as a designer, Kahn was a charismatic and beloved university professor at Yale and in Philadelphia, leaving a profound theoretical legacy before his sudden death at Penn Station in New York in 1974.
