Black opals, just like their differently colored counterparts, occur as a spherelike to knobby mass with no recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only after the stone is cut and polised. Characteristic of this form of opal is its opalescence, which shines with a vivid rainbow sparkle. In addition, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it this name.
Black opals form, just like other opals, from siliceous fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
