Bjarke Ingels was born in Copenhagen in 1974 and initially developed a deep passion for comic drawing, a visual and narrative influence that will profoundly mark his subsequent approach to architectural design. Enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and after completing studies at the Technica Universitat of Barcelona, he began his professional career by collaborating in Rotterdam with architect Rem Koolhaas at the OMA studio. In 2001 he returned to Denmark to co-found the studio PLOT together with Belgian colleague Julien De Smedt, quickly gaining international attention thanks to innovative and disruptive residential projects. The partnership ended in 2005, the year in which Ingels formally founded the Bjarke Ingels Group, known as BIG, transforming it in a short time into one of the most influential and global architectural realities of the twenty-first century. Renowned for his extraordinary communication skills and for a vision that combines utopian optimism with pragmatic feasibility, Ingels has established himself on the world stage, signing revolutionary works that redefine the relationship between urban spaces, environmental sustainability, and social leisure. Nominated in 2016 among the hundred most influential people in the world by Time magazine, the architect continues to lead the development of visionary projects that range from futuristic floating neighborhoods to masterplans for future human settlement in extraterrestrial space.
